Kefal Pilakisi (Grey Mullet Pilaki)


  • 1 kg. grey mullet
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • bunch of chopped parsley
  • 3 cups of water
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 2 medium onions
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 2 carrots
  • 3 small potatoes
  • 3 small bunches of celery
  • 5 cloves of garlic


Slice the onions and place in a saucepan with 1/4 cup olive oil and saute. After 5 minutes add 3 cups of water and cook for 20 minutes until the onions become very soft. Set aside.

Peel the potatoes, put them in a bowl with the celery cut into small squares, carrots cut into small squares, chopped garlic and the tomatoes cut into small pieces. Spread this over the onions, cover and cook for 20 minutes over medium heat. After gutting and cleaning the fish, slice it into circles that are 5 cm thick. Add the fish to the vegetable mixture with salt and the rest of the olive oil. After cooking for about 15 minutes over high heat, add lemon juice and parsley. Remove the pan from the oven and serve after it has cooled down.
